The Biltmore Hotel

The Biltmore Hotel, inspiration for Stephen King’s Overlook Hotel and Robert Bloch’s Bates Motel, holds the dubious honor of having been named “America’s Most Haunted Hotel” in 2000 by the American Hotel & Lodging Association. The Biltmore finished construction in 1918, financed by proud Satanist Johan Leisse Weisskopf. Weisskopf was unsubtle about his plan for the hotel: it would be a venue through which to familiarize reticent Puritan New Englanders with the joys of his religion. The hotel was built to include a chicken coop on the roof, to supply sacrifices for weekly masses; hot springs in the basement for purification rituals (rumors that whirlpools were filled with human blood are likely only the wild imaginings of later generations); and the famous Bacchante Girls, who waitressed nude in the Bacchante Dining Room, which perhaps more accurately might have been called the Bacchante Orgy Pit, frequented by such luminaries of the time as Douglas Fairbanks, F Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong.

Photobucket

Obviously, the Satanism gives the hotel a bad name, though it was Weisskopf’s ties to the Rhode Island mob that probably did the hotel its only real damage. Despite the scores of chickens slaughtered in the hotel, they are not the ones who haunt its halls.

Rhode Island was widely known as the state least likely to follow Prohibition’s laws, and the Biltmore was one of the most decadent places to get drunk. No one hid in speakeasy basements in the Biltmore: wine was a quarter a glass, served in crystal. Men of the law and of the government drank free. This was likely one of the reasons that between the years 1920 and 1933 six police officers were implicated in the murders of eight people within the walls of the Biltmore, along with one governor (at least six rapes, one murder) one mayor (one murder), and a cardinal (one eleven year-old prostitute drowned in a bathtub). These are the ghosts that are said to haunt the Biltmore, along with all of the other victims of men of less auspicious rank. Nightly, after the bars close, raucous drinking and dancing and talking and laughing is heard; some guests of the hotel disappear at night and are never found.

Providence’s modern-day Satanists like to point out that the disappearances only began after new management took over the Biltmore’s day-to-day operations, “cleaning the place up” for the tourists and businessmen, forbidding their maids any blood sacrifices, reupholstering the stained velvet seating in the Bacchante Room, tearing down the chicken coops, boarding up the underground alter rooms. They claim that it was in fact the Satanism that kept the ghosts at bay and protected the living. The current owners, disagreeing, will allow no experimentation, so it remains at this time an unknown.

UPDATE: Two more disappearances in 2008: Erving F. Bishop, 42, and his daughter Emily Bishop, 4, tourists from New Jersey, disappeared sometime between 11pm on Saturday, November 15 and 4am, Sunday the 16th. Apparently the girl could not get to sleep, so her father took her on a walk around the hotel. Joanne Newnon-Bishop, the girl's mother, fell asleep just after they left, and by the time she was startled awake at 3:50am, they had disappeared. This brings 2008's total to 6.

    2. Wow, I only got to this page because of my experience at this hotel. I woke up initially at 1:15am because something touched my eye lid. i closed my eyes and put my head back on the pillow again. Instantly something touched my eyes again. I freaked out and turned the light on. I finally fell asleep. Then I woke up at 3 something in the morning with what felt like a man pressing down on me. I could not move, breath or open my eyes. I finally let out a scary screeching sound that woke up my husband (who was on the other end of the king size bed). I made him move right next to me cause that was the only way I was comfortable. I didn't sleep the rest of the night.

  5. I stayed in room 833 last Wednesday night. I had never heard of the Biltmore being haunted. I did have an unusual experience. Before I went to bed, I shut the security lock (the one that is a long piece of metal above the regular locks). In the morning, when I was leaving to get my coffee, I noticed that the lock was open. Thinking I may have just forgotten, I didn't think much of it. When I got back to the room, I closed the door and made sure I shut the security lock before taking my shower. When I got out of the shower I checked the door and sure enough....it was open! I will not be going back!

  6. I swear to all of you that I stayed there in June of 2001 for 6 nights and there was a ghost in my room. I saw her image twice and I freaked out. When I checked out, the front desk clerk informed me that I was not the first person to see a ghost at the hotel. It was really scary. I never believe people when they tell me they see ghosts but after that experience I am now a believer.

  8. I stayed there over the weekend and I'm 100% serious that I heard moaning and loud bumps in room 543

  9. This is all a crock. I've been reading this and very anxiously anticipated staying there this past weekend. As a cynic, I was desperately hoping for something. Never happened.
My findings? Nothing. I spoke to every staff member I could find and they all laughed. This is a running joke with them. We were in room 820, and did some poking around. Nothing. It's an old and creaky hotel with noisy pipes and walls that allows sounds to carry.
The person on here who heard moaning and bumping while in room 543 just means that the person in room 542 was having a great night. And I can't help but notice that most of these "experiences" came after a night of heavy drinking for most of these folks. No coincidence there.
So, from my experience I would say that you can write this legend off as pure fiction. Sorry.

  10. I am currently stayin in the biltmore ryte now... The hotel seems to get very very loud after midnight around 2 a.m
Every paranormal expert states that after 1 a.m it is considered "Dead Time"!
I actualy could not sleep because of all of the noise that was going on ... Put it this way wutever paranormal activity is in the biltmore it is not the good kind..

    1. Seriously!! I didn't sleep all night because there was also so much noise. I didn't know the history before I stayed here. And the front desk confirmed that the place is haunted when I checked out in the morning.

    2. It doesn't help people's arguments that all these phonies on YouTube make their quote "paranormal videos" that are obviously horse shit either. People are so gullible it's pathetic.I don't believe for a minute that someone at the front desk told you this place was haunted. They do a great business there and it is not based on it's haunted history but based on its beauty and what a wonderful place it is to have wedding receptions etc..Now they wouldn't be that successful if their desk clerks were telling people that the place was haunted would they?

  11. Stayed in room 1608 last night. When I came up in elevator around 1130pm as I got off and into hallway...I could hear the bar as if it was in room next to me. Loud, people talking, drinks cheering. I was on 16th floor. No way to hear bar in lobby. Didn't know anything about hotels history until this afternoon well after check out. But there was definitely a party going on somewhere. Sounded like a full bar. Strange.

  12. My wife and I stayed here one night in May 2013. I wondered if anything was going to happen or if we would see anything but quickly forgot about it once I got tired and we went to bed. The next morning, my wife walked to the bathroom to take her shower when she noticed the top door latch lock was open. She closed it and took her shower. When she got out, I heard her ask me if I went out. I hadn't and asked her why she asked, she explained what she had seen and done and showed my the (once again open) latch lock!
We both remembered me closing the latch lock and dead-bolting the bottom lock as I had to push the door a bit with my foot to line the dead bolt up to lock it.
Right as we closed the latch lock...again, I looked down and saw that the dead bolt lock was UNLOCKED!
    Very strange and spooky!

  14. I just stayed there June 30 to July 2 with my wife (we are both physicians), and son for his college orientation. Since I got to read this before check in I found a stairway in the area with the service elevators that took me down to the sub-basements and found nothing that would resemble what could be used as described above. I tried to use Annie's excuse that I wanted to go upstairs and sleep in the room of another guest who happened to be female. but she didn't buy it and he was appalled.

  16. I stayed there for one night with my sister a year ago in September. We both heard of it being haunted but didn't think much of it. Maybe it was a coincidence but every time we went to use the elevator and got 10 feet from it the doors would open. We didn't press the button and there was absolutely no one else there every time. Late that night after we settled in for the night I was about to brush my teeth (12:00am) and my sister called my name. I went to the bedroom and the alarm clock was going off. We both looked at it and the button for the alarm was turned off, freaky! I also woke up at 3am with all the blankets off which is odd because I always bundle up in the sheets when going to sleep. Don't think I'll be returning.. ever.

  25. I went there last August. I syayed for 4 nights, alone. Wake up at 3 AM because I heard a voice warning me to cover my ears because "It's going to be really loud". Then my bed started to shake. I was terrified, so I talked to the "ghost" saying that I couldn't help her, that I was really sorry for her death, but I couldn't do anything. After that the haunting stoped, but this there was a persistent feeling of oppression in the air.

  26. My husband and I stayed in room 326 for the last 3 nights. Our friends got married at the Biltmore this weekend. My husband is from Louisiana & talks about seeing ghosts when he was a child, I've never seen any and have been skeptical. The first night we got in at 1a because our fight was super delayed. While we were unpacking quickly before bed, my husband did a double take looking at the doorway of our room, said he just saw sometime walk by (into our bathroom). I ignored because I like to stay naive about this questionable "ghost world".

The first 2 nights, we took Ambien, so I'm uncertain if anything happened or not. Last night, we got in bed at 2a. I woke at 430a to water running & our tv really loud. I thought someone above or around us was showering & I could hear the water in the pipes. I turned off the tv & stayed in bed, listening to the water run-waiting for them to finish showering so I could go back to sleep. I finally got up to pee & realized our bathroom sink was the water running. I turned it off, confused & jumped back in bed. The tv had turned back on while i was in the bathroom. I woke my husband & asked if he had gotten up or had turned on the tv, he said, "no". I woke an hour later to the same thing, water running/tv loud. I turned off the water & left the tv on so I could focus on whatever show that was on HGTV to settle my nerves.

I purposely waited until after we checked out to now look up whether there were any reports of the Biltmore Providence being haunted. I'm not sure what the hell happened in our room but suggest ghost enthusiasts to check out room 326 if that's what you are looking for. It was a beautiful hotel but I'm good with not experiencing any further questionable activity there.

I also asked the bell boys about being haunted & they laughed but said people tell them stories.

  28. Do you have a source for the disappearance of Erving and Emily Bishop? Despite having their names and date of disappearance the only thing I can find online that mentions them is this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  29. After further research I'm going to call this claim completely, absolutely, totally fraudulent. There is no record of Erving and Emily Bishop, there is no record of Johan Leisse Weisskopf as an owner or a satanist (in fact, the Biltmore website says the original owners were John Bowman and Louis Wallick) and The Overlook Hotel in The Shining was based on a stay in The Stanley Hotel according to Stephen King's website. I've got $5 that says the person who wrote this blog is either an employee at the hotel looking to drum up business or someone who works for the ghost hunting shows looking to justify filming random ghost specials at the Biltmore.

  30. I just checked out from the Biltmore this morning, room 328. A couple of nights ago, I took an Uber from Warwick, and as we nearest the hotel the driver mentioned it was haunted. I didn't say anything to him, but thought, "Why the heck did you tell me this." That night, absolutely nothing happened. Last night, absolutely nothing happened. I did have really bad indigestion, but I think this was from the crappy lobster bisque I ate that evening at dinner.

However, the first night, before I learned the hotel was supposed to be haunted, there were a lot of drunk, obnoxious sales people in town for a convention, but no evidence of ghosts.

I'm with others here that think, while the above is a great story, without references it may as well be fiction.

  31. Im googling this hotel because Im supposed to stay here for my job but I just switched to the Dean.

Last year I went for my job to visit a local college and stayed two nights, I forgot which room, I kept hearing noise outside my room, I remember looking out the peephole a lot and saw nothing. I left after two nights but I really liked Providence and this hotel so I drove my wife and two kids here a few months later. We stayed here again, this is where it got creepy.

We stayed on an upper floor overlooking the old church, when we woke in the morning my wife swore that something ice cold touched her back and that she heard mumbling coming from our kids' bed. There was some kind of scratching on the walls around this time but that couldve been mice, the mumbling couldve been my kids but the ice cold back touch is freakin creepy as hell. She said she pulled the covers up all the way after that and until this day refuses to sleep w her back exposed.

It was also rainy during our stay and we ate breakfast in the dining room with NO ONE else.... we sat in the middle of the room. Something really bizarre about the whole scene.
I am going back for my job but when I googled for the address google suggested Biltmore Haunted, thats when I saw all this crazy stuff being reported. I have since chose a diff hotel.

  32. To the naysayers; multiple YouTube videos that clearly show guests' door slamming and lights turning on and off at the PBH.
In 2007, I stayed at the PBH for medical business. Alone in the a room, I was awoken between 2-3 am to the Large Screen TV suddenly turning on to full volume, all the windows of the room fully open, and the curtains billowing in from the winter wind. The bathroom shower was running. No one could have entered the room while I was asleep; the latch bolt was engaged.
I was neither drunk nor under the influence, as I was there to attend a Medical Conference as a Brown Medical Alumnus.
On check out, I asked the bell man and the front desk if this ever happened to any other guests, and they said it has.

It was the it hotel for weddings and people with money. That being said, I live in Michigan now and I am a huge “Ghost Hunter-Adventure”. I will seek out haunted hotels. This is news to me. I have a trip planned to go back home soon. I am questioning staying there just to debunk or anxiously hope that this will come true! Hmmmm.

  43. Excellent hotel. The ambiance and location remind me of a hotel I discovered while searching for a classy yet affordable hotel on The Select App. This app has helped me save a lot of money.
